KANSAI HELIOS corrosion protection coatings protect the Ostbahn bridge for another 40 years.
At KANSAI HELIOS, we are committed to environmentally friendly coatings with low solvent content and bio-based raw materials to provide long-term protection for critical infrastructure, such as bridges and building structures. A current example is the renovation of Vienna’s Ostbahn bridge, which has been undergoing general refurbishment since March 2024—using corrosion protection coatings from KANSAI HELIOS Austria.
The Ostbahn bridge, with a steel surface area of around 57,000 m², will be optimally protected for another 40 years with our corrosion protection systems. Despite ongoing train traffic, the refurbishment is being carried out without interruption, requiring close coordination between the construction company and transport operators. This project, with a budget of around 20 million euros and a duration of over two years, marks a significant milestone in the bridge’s history. We are proud to be part of this project. In August, we visited the bridge with a film crew to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the work in the following video:
Opened in 1870, the Ostbahn bridge is a crucial link in Vienna’s rail network, spanning the Danube and connecting the 3rd and 11th districts. The bridge is vital for both rail and pedestrian traffic. Due to its age and the continuous load it has borne over the past century, a comprehensive renovation was necessary to ensure its stability and safety for future generations.

Economical and durable protection against corrosion
Corrosion is one of the greatest threats to steel structures. Without appropriate protection, material damage is inevitable, jeopardizing the stability and safety of structures. The high-performance coatings from KANSAI HELIOS, compliant with EN ISO 12944, provide effective protection against external influences, reducing maintenance costs and conserving resources.
The Ostbahn bridge renovation demonstrates that using durable materials not only makes ecological sense but also economic sense. Corrosion protection systems from KANSAI HELIOS protect infrastructure and cultural treasures worldwide, including the Vienna Ferris Wheel, electricity pylons, airports, railroad stations, power plants, car factories, and more. The KANSAI HELIOS Group will continue to prioritize research and development in corrosion protection to ensure the long-term preservation of valuable structures.
